RACE REPORTS
AGENT 1320
For the third straight NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship race, there was a different points leader by the end of the event in Pro Stock Motorcycle. After winning last weekend in Dallas, former class champ LE Tonglet hopes that is a trend he can break starting at this weekend’s 11th annual NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway.
Making his second straight final round appearance in the playoffs, Tonglet picked up his fourth win of the year on his Nitro Fish Racing Suzuki, opening up a 47-point lead on defending world champion and event winner Eddie Krawiec, who was the leader after the Countdown to the Championship opener. Matt Smith, who now trails Tonglet by 48 points, was the leader after winning the second race, but Tonglet is ready for a continued stay at the top after this weekend.
“We just have to stay calm and take it one round at a time,” Tonglet said. “The key is to go rounds and when we show up to a race, I just want to get the semifinals. Whatever happens after that is just bonus kind of. If you keep going to the semis, you’re going to have a good shot come Pomona. We just have to stay calm and focused, and not make any mistakes.” [10/12/18]
With rain in the forecast this weekend for the Ferris, TX, area, the Southwest Heritage Racing Association has been forced to reschedule their championship finals. Due to a full schedule at Xtreme Raceway Park, the final event will take place at North Star Dragway in Denton, TX, on Saturday, Nov. 10. [10/12/18]
Roger Cavallaro was last year’s champion also.
Therefore, the season is completed and the series champions are Roger Cavallaro in Gasser and Mike Meeks in Mod. [10/12/18]
Low temperatures and rain have caused the Milan (MI) Dragway folks to cancel the Friday, Oct. 12, event. It was the last Aeroquip Heads Up event of the season. The series will return on May 3, 2019.
Racing is still on schedule for Saturday and Sunday at this time. [10/12/18]
On Saturday, Oct. 20, MAVTV brings you Drag Strip Rumble, a 30-minute special featuring nitro-powered front-engine Top Fuel dragsters in quarter-mile competition from Bowling Green, KY.
Analysis and commentary will be from Top Fuel insider (and former DRO contributor) Cole Coonce and former Funny Car driver Whit Bazemore.
Drag Strip Rumble will air four times on the MAVTV Motorsports Network: Saturday, Oct. 20, at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. ET, and again Saturday, Oct. 27, at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. ET.
The Agent has seen an advance copy of part of the show and highly recommends it! [10/12/18]
Joining the author will be camshaft innovator, the legendary Ed “Isky” Iskenderian, who celebrated his 97th birthday last month. [10/12/18]
