Krawiec hopeful for continued success at Maple Grove

Racing at Maple Grove Raceway has seemed to always bring out the best in defending Pro Stock Motorcycle world champ Eddie Krawiec.

Krawiec has back-to-back wins at the facility, four since 2012 and five overall on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson, giving the four-time world champ an incredible track record at Maple Grove Raceway. Coming off a year where he won four of the six playoff races, Krawiec hopes he can get off to a fast start at a track that’s served him well over the years.

“We’ve got good motorcycles and we’ve been performing well the second half of the season, and I don’t see it changing from that perspective,” Krawiec said. “We always try to run and be better, for us we have to keep the motorcycle consistent on raceday. It’s not good to come out, go fast and then taper off. You want to go fast every run and then continually go fast each run at each track. It’s easier said than done, but that’s the key to the Countdown.”

Haverly to the rescue!

With Hurricane Florence barreling toward the U.S. southeast coast and evacuations going on in many areas, sometimes people just can’t take their pets with them.

DRO photographer Chris Haverly is one of many people who have stepped up to rescue some four-footed friends.

Ace, the DRO office dog, gives Haverly and all the others who help a distinctive ‘coonhound bay’ salute.

Amanda Martin returns to Aussie competition in new car

After a season-ending high-speed crash in March of this year, Amanda Martin is preparing to make her racing comeback in a new car at next weekend’s Sunset Strip Nationals in Mildura.

The September 22-23 event at the Sunset Strip marks round three of the Australian Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series and will see the Emerald Ink business owner from Balcatta in Western Australia debut a new Chevy Cobalt.

She was testing her old Jerry Haas-built Pontiac earlier in the year when it hit the wall at 285 kilometres per hour (176.70 mph) and ended the season. Her new Chevy Cobalt is powered by a 667 BBC Stephen Schmidt engine and in testing has already run 7.0 seconds at 309.85 kph (192.41 mph).

Martin began racing in Super Sedan in 2014 and moved to Top Sportsman in the middle of the 2016 season. She currently is the only woman competing in the Australian Top Sportsman ranks.

Adkins sets records at Shakedown at the Summit

During a test session held on Sept. 13 in advance of the Summit Racing Equipment Shakedown at the Summit presented by Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels, Sept. 14-16 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, OH, David Adkins blasted to a 6.03 at 243.63 mph followed by a 5.975 at 243.11 mph in his car built by Jerry Bickel Race Cars and topped with a Synergy Composites 1970 1/2 Camaro body.

Adkins' potent powerplant consists of a Baker Racing Engines-built 427 cubic-inch LS engine on a Noonan billet block topped with Baker billet heads and a Thomsen Motorsports intake, and the extra kick is courtesy of twin 94mm Garrett turbos with Turbosmart wastegates and blowoff. An RPM Transmissions-built Turbo 400 and ProTorque converter put power down in the car rolling on Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels 315 drag radials. Crew chief and tuner is TJ Grimes.

“Those are world records for the quickest quarter-mile ET and fastest mph for an LS-powered car, and it’s the second radial car ever to go 5s,” said Adkins of Michigan. “I’ve been running eighth-mile, so for these quarter-mile passes, it felt different to have the chutes out and to be standing on the brake to get the car stopped, but it was worth it.”

All but one XDA Real Street championship will go down to final event

Spencer Claycomb needs only to show up at MDIR and claim his 2018 DME Racing Pro Street Championship.

The Xtreme Dragbike Association will hold its final race of the year Sept. 21-23 at Maryland International Raceway. Going into the Fall Nationals, Real Street is the only class where the championship is already decided. For the other seven classes – Pro Street, 4.60, 5.60, Crazy 8’s, Top Sportsman, Pro ET, and Street ET -- it will be all out warfare in this contest of speed, grit, and determination.

Off the Track: So long, Bandit

Thousands of New York fans will pay their respects to “Smokey and the Bandit” star Burt Reynolds on Sept. 30 at Long Island, New York’s largest car show with the “100 Trans Am Salute,” a ceremonial parade of over 100 classic Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams in procession at Eisenhower Park.

The memorial will pay homage to the iconic movie star by showing the original two movies to be viewed by dozens of drivers dressed in character. Reynolds, who lived in New York at one time, was invited to New York’s biggest car show by the organizers but passed away on Sept. 6 at age 82.
