COCA-COLA CAVALCADE RETURNS?
The Agent continues to hear snippets of information
regarding the burgeoning Nostalgia Funny Car
scene. According to many sources within the
Nostalgia Fuel ranks, business should
be picking up later in 2004 and even more so
in 2005. Plans are under way for an expanded
match race scene, with several track promoters
already lining up dates and cars. For now, most
of the proposed action is slated for locales
east of the Mississippi, but that could change
depending on who builds cars, and how far they
would be willing to travel.
Virgil Hartman, well known NHRA Top Fuel owner
and successful nitro driver in his own right,
is actively involved in the activity. Working
with Donnie Reeves, Hartman is helping to coordinate
activity between interested racers and promoters.
Proposed events range from one-on-one match
races (two runs) to Chicago-style shows. One
promoter who has contacted Hartman has visions
of resurrecting the old Coca-Cola Cavalcade
of Stars type format, with a circuit of 8-16
car shows as the premise. There has even been
a fair amount of interest from chassis builders
(J Ed Horton and Murf McKinney) and parts suppliers,
who are always on the lookout for new customers.
The Agent is well aware of a number of idle
race cars that would fit into the nostalgia
flopper bag. Now, if those cars can resurface
as part of the "new" nostalgia craze, so much
the better for nitro fans everywhere. [6-4-2004]
