POSSIBLE NEW NHRA PRO MOD
CLASS?
The worst kept secret these days, according
to the drag racing rumor mill, is that a group
of three Pro Mod team owners and sponsors, Dave
Wood of AMS Staff Leasing, Tommy Lipar, owner
of the Von Smith Pro Mod team, and Jim Jannard
of Oakley have put a proposal on NHRA president
Tom Compton's desk that would ensure a Pro Mod
class at NHRA for the next five years. Details
are sketchy but the rumor mill has the deal
including a 16-car field, a very good purse
including funding for a championship points
fund, and rules that don't necessarily copy
the IHRA rulebook as they do now.
The Agent has been unable to reach any of the
reported group of investors, but with the current
problem many of the supercharged teams are having
regarding the repeated IHRA rule changes, the
Agent believes that many of the current stars
of Pro Mod would support an NHRA series exclusively.

SUPERCHARGED PRO MOD TEAMS TAKE ACDELCO NATIONALS OFF SCHEDULE?
Several of the high-profile supercharged Pro
Modified teams have sent letters to the management
at Virginia Motorsports Park saying they will
be unable to attend the event because they cannot
get the parts needed to convert from 25 percent

percent.
NHRA gave the racers a one-race grace period
allowing them to race at the upcoming Route
66 NHRA event due to the fact that NHRA determined
that the pulleys required for teams to convert
to 20 percent overdrive weren't readily available.
Team owners have stated that they will need
testing time after they get the parts to "get
back some of the horsepower we lost with the
new rule change." Among those teams reportedly
taking a pass on the ACDelco-backed race include
Jim Oddy's Summit Racing Equipment-backed team,
Quain Stott's LeeBoy Paving team, Paul Athey's
Mohegan Sun Casino team, Scotty Cannon's Oakley-sponsored
team, and Dave Wood's AMS Staff Leasing team.
On the other hand the Agent hears that points
leader Al Billes will attend and that the Mike
Janis and Tommy Lipar teams will be at VMP.
