IHRA DETERMINED TO 'BALANCE'
PRO MOD FIELD
The Agent hears that IHRA's management team
has made it very clear that no matter how hard
or who their supercharged Pro Mod teams lobby,
the 20 percent rule is likely to stay in place
for the foreseeable future. The Agent hears
that some of the supercharged racers have taken
their case to Clear Channel Entertainment's
management team and have been completely unsuccessful
with the CCE telling the racers that the current
rules will stand but they will be subject to
review as the season progresses.
Also, IHRA's Scooter Peaco reportedly has told
some racers that if the new rules slow blown
cars down too much (how much is "too much" is
the burning question) he will probably take
weight off the blown cars. According to several
reliable sources, IHRA management is determined
to do whatever is necessary to ensure that eight
nitrous cars and eight blown cars make the qualified
field. The overdrive reduction for the blown
cars and giving the nitrous cars the MSD "traction
control" was the first step in that plan.

IT'S ALL ABOUT NUMBERS
Continuing with the Pro Mod theme today. A
quick look at the qualifying sheets from the
first two races of the 2004 IHRA season showed
that the bump for Pro Mod, if eight nitrous
cars qualified at each race, would have been
a 6.337 at San Antonio and a 6.303 at Rockingham.
And, if you throw out Fred Hahn's 6.14 at Rockingham,
the fields would still be separated by just
a tenth to a tenth and a half. In the Agent's
opinion the NHRA and IHRA Pro Stock and Pro
Mod fields are slowly getting harder and harder
to tell apart from the cheap seats. [5-14-2004]
