ROMINE'S GONE TWO-WHEELIN'

The formerly attractive Paul Romine, who is currently unemployed as a Top Fuel driver, has turned his interests to other forms of fast vehicles to get his thrills. He sent us this photo of a trick Harley Davidson tourer that he is having built at Mike Spitzer's Indianapolis fabrication facility. You can't tell it from the photo but the HD has a swing arm rear suspension and other tricks. The Agent especially likes the "old school" wire wheels front and rear. And you thought Spitzer was just a race car builder and Romine was just a hot-shot pilot and Top Fuel driver. Nice "putt", guys. [6-22-2005]

YET ANOTHER BRUTON SMITH/NHRA RUMOR

The Agent got a call from one of his sources in Charlotte. According to the source, Mr. Smith has evidently decided that NHRA isn’t going to sell to his SMI company. Supposedly Smith is going to do the next best thing and start his own sanctioning body and offer racers and fans a ten-race series with six of the races being staged at the tracks he currently owns -- Bristol, Sonoma and Las Vegas -- and put on four more races at other venues.

The rumor also has him significantly increasing the payout and purse for the pros. Sounds pretty far-fetched to the Agent until you consider three significant items (1) Mr. Smith’s SMI corp has to expand and grow to satisfy his investors. (2) SMI is probably not going to get any more NASCAR tracks or events from the France family who controls NASCAR. And (3) There are plenty or race tracks and track operators who need more events for their yearly race event calendar. More rumors when the Agent gets them. [6-22-2005]

PEDEN BUYS A 747

No, Super Comp/Top Sportsman racer and Country Motor Trailer Sales owner, Don Peden, isn't buying one of Boeing's Jumbo jets to transport his racing rig. What he should be getting soon though is a 747 cubic inch rat motor from Reher-Morrison for his new Jerry Bickel Race Cars' Cobalt. Peden would like to be the first Super Comp doorslammer to run 200 mph in the quarter mile. (Jeff Burk photo) [6-22-2005]
