GLENDORA, WE HAVE A PROBLEM

In light of the timing fiasco that cost, then reinstated, Steve Johnson's Pro Stock Bike win at the U.S. Nationals, it seemed particularly poignant that Tony Pedregon registered an obviously incorrect 635-mph in his first qualifying attempt at the very next event in Reading, PA.

Immediately prior to Pedregon's pass, Phil Burkart's car registered 0.000 mph, so maybe the timing system just saved up and added the two speeds together. Even the "optical data" couldn't sort out this one. (Ian Tocher photo) [9-26-2005]

BERNSTEIN AND THE BATMOBILE COMING BACK?

One persistent rumor that just won't seem to go away is that Kenny Bernstein is seeking a return to the nitro wars
driving a nitro flopper. Since the Budweiser folks apparently have no interest in seeing Kenny driving a Top Fuel car that would compete with their own Bud King car and after KB's recent sponsorship renewal with A-B, it makes sense to the Agent that the St. Louis-based brewing giant probably has a personal services contract with the future hall-of-famer that would keep him from driving for someone else.

What's next, Dale Armstrong coming out of retirement to tune KB's new fuel flopper? The Agent doesn't think either scenario is likely to happen, but then again, this is drag racing after all. [9-26-2005]
