NHRA TAKES SOME HEAT ON TV SHOW
The reviews are mixed on the new "NHRA Heat" TV magazine that airs
this year on TNN before every national event. The format is directed
more toward features than it is race coverage, but, according to VP/Communications
Jerry Archambeault, NHRA is willing to experiment with various formulas
to find what works.
Still, with 24 airings of "NHRA Heat" and same day coverage of EVERY
national event including the Winston Showdown, NHRA erroneously is hyping
the current package as the "best ever." How could it be the "best ever"
when just two years ago there were 52 "NHRA Today" shows?
While NHRA should be congratulated on responding to the problems of
TV coverage and for putting together a good package in a very short
span of time, it also should be chastised for actions which initially
resulted in the cancellation of "NHRA Today."
Ironically, the fiasco that led to that cancellation reportedly began
when TNN asked the NHRA if anything could be done about delays in the
racing program which too often caused coverage to run over into other
programming, paid programming, in fact.
Under Compton's leadership, NHRA now has shortened the program. Had
it taken steps to do so two years ago, it never would have been without
a regular TV presence.
