Editor Jeff Burk is placing the blame for the screw-up on Bob Muravez or Floyd Lippencott or whatever his name is. “When we got the Goodguys story from Indy it came without any photography,” Burk whined, “so I went to a group of photos of action from the Goodguys Las Vegas race sent to DRO by my buddy Joel Gelfand. I picked a photo of what I thought was Larry Gould’s Ford cammer. Larry was at Indy, so it made some sense to run a photo of his car with the story. I swear I thought I was doing the right thing.

“When the story appeared, the headline on the cover read ‘NRA at Indy.’ When I wrote that headline I must have been subliminally influenced by having watched the Charleston Heston character on ‘That’s My Bush’ on television,” Burk continued weaseling. “A couple of readers reminded me that the National Rifle Association wasn’t at Indy that weekend.

“’Change that headline for the Indy race story!’ I bellowed to the webmaster. Then I leaned back in the old swivel chair, confident that all was right in the world of DRO. I couldn’t have been more mistaken.

“As I soon learned, the photo I chose wasn’t of Larry Gould, it was Howard Haight and neither of those two guys were Bob Muravez or Floyd Lippencott or whatever alias that guy is now using. To make matters worse,” Burk whimpered, now on the floor in the fetal position, “the production manager got confused and gave a photo credit to the wrong photographer, Todd Dziadosz instead of Joel Gelfand.

“So if you look at the story now, we have replaced the photo of Howard Haight (the only guy involved with this who hasn’t phoned or emailed me) with a photo of Bob Muravez from the Las Vegas race taken by Jim Sorenson (or at least Jim tells me it is Muravez. I wouldn’t be surprised at this point if it turned out to be a photo of Arley Langlo.)

“As the great Tommy Lasorda once said when asked about his job,” Burk concluded, “’This $&#%##% job is not that $&#%##% easy!’”

Man, even the Agent needs a day off after that one.

IT MAY BE CONEY, BUT HE’S NO WEINIE

Photographer Norman Blake sent DRO this old photo of Broadway Freddy De Name doing a burnout at Coney Island. We thought we’d share it with you since it’s not something you see every day. Ya gotta problem wi’ dat?
