ANOTHER NOSTALGIA DRAG RACING SERIES?

With last year's now defunct ADRA (American Drag Racing Association) having left a trail of unpaid bills, bouncing checks, and the promise of a big purses and payouts for today's nostalgia racers...here comes another one.

The American Racing Hot Rod Association (ARHRA) is presenting its inaugural event at the Speedworld Motorplex in Phoenix. After more than 30 years a Winternational drag racing event is being held in the Valley of the Sun over the January 9-12, 2003 weekend. The last ones were held at AHRA's Beeline Dragway in the '60s and '70s.

The ARHRA is expecting over 800 cars from Top Fuel Dragsters, Fuel Altereds, Nostalgia Funny Cars, Gassers, A/FX1s, and vintage Super Stockers, a $5,000 payout is promised for the winner of Top Fuel. Current Pro Mods have also been invited although no names have been announced as yet.

Weather can be warm and dry in the Southwest in January and the NHRA winter warm-ups are planned for Charlie Allen's Firebird Raceway in Phoenix January 18-19, Southwest International Raceway in Tucson on January 24-26, and a new Pro and Sportsman warmer at the Strip at Las Vegas on February 1-2... all of this action prior to the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona. PHILLIPS BUYS PART-INTEREST IN MMP, ANNOUNCES 2003 SCHEDULE

Bracket racer Chris Phillips of Atlanta has purchased half-interest in the lease of Montgomery Motorsports Park in Alabama from NHRA Competition Eliminator and Super Stock racer Bob Dennis, and has announced major changes in scheduling and improvement at the quarter-mile facility, located in the capital city of Alabama.

Philips, along with leasee Anthony Oehler, plans on putting on a full NHRA Division 2 bracket racing points program consisting of seven monthly, two-day bracket events that will include an increased purse, a weekly points fund and a season-ending points fund, all for a reasonable entry fee. Also, Phillips has announced that his Phillips Motorsports Super Eliminator Series of bracket races, wherein dragsters and door cars are separated until the final and each runs the other for an additional $1,000 in cash, will continue, with MMP hosting two of the six events in 2003.

Montgomery will also host two Division 2 points races and two Sport Compact Challenge races, plus a Super Chevy Sunday in October, two all-motorcycle events plus several Pro Modified races and "10.5" Outlaw class races. The super-track recently hosted an NHRA divisional race that saw 24 new national records set.
