NEW FACTORY CYLINDER HEAD FOR CHEVY?
The Agent hears that one of the reasons that Warren and Kurt Johnson
had a bad (by their standards) season was that the pair were busy developing
a new cylinder head for the 2003 season. According to the Agent's sources,
the new GM heads were developed as an answer for Mopar's new "Hemi"
head, a cylinder head that is making gobs of power for the Mopar racers.
How good is the new "Hemi"? In case you haven't heard Rick Jones ran
a 6.53 with his IHRA Mopar-bodied Pro Stocker using a Jon Kaase-built
engine with that cylinder head. Now, don't start calling your local
Chevy dealer to order the new cylinder head, as this is just a rumor
the Agent heard from a reliable source and nothing has been officially
released.
But Warren and Kurt sure picked up the pace at the end of the season,
didn't they? [12-27-2002]
BARRETT AND KING NOT WAITING FOR DARLINGTON
Mopar Pro Mod standard bearer Chip King and his tuner/engine builder
Bill Barrett aren't going to wait for the Darlington Dragway race in
mid-February or for Bobby Bennett's InfiNet/GM Performance-backed Virginia
Motorsports Park race in late March to go after the coveted five-second
doorslammer pass. Barrett and King were kind enough to let the Agent
know that they would be going to Houston December 27-28 to try and break
the barrier.

Barrett (photo above), who assists Australian super star Victor Bray
with his tune-up, has built a small (468 cubic inch) Hemi and put a
screw blower on that. According to Barrett, one of the big problems
that Victor Bray has faced in his attempt to go a five is that his engine
(which the Agent thinks is over 526 ci) makes too much torque in low
gear and is prone to spin the tires. Barrett and King evidently think
the smaller engine could solve the problem. If the pair don't get the
five at Houston, they may try again in March at VMP as the current rules
for that race allow any kind of blower where the Darlington affair doesn't
allow screw compressors. [12-27-2002]
