TURBO CONTROVERSY STARTS

The Import Drag Racing Circuit has implemented a change in their Pro class rules. All IDRC V8 competitors will be assigned a maximum turbocharger compressor wheel inducer diameter based on their competition weight. Heavier V8-powered vehicles will be allowed to use slightly larger compressor wheels in their turbochargers than the lighter vehicles.

Comp weight Max. compressor wheel inducer
2350 lbs. 63.5 mm (twin) / 89.8 mm (single)
2400 lbs. 64.5 mm (twin) / 91.2 mm (single)
2450 lbs. 65.6 mm (twin) / 92.6 mm (single)
2500 lbs. 66.5 mm (twin) / 94.0 mm (single)
2550 lbs. 67.5 mm (twin) / 95.4 mm (single)
2600 lbs. 68.5 mm (twin) / 96.9 mm (single)
2650+ lbs. 69.5 mm (twin) / 98.2 mm (single)

Comp weight is the weight of vehicle plus driver at the scales after a run. Nitrous-only V8-powered vehicles must still have a minimum weight of 2250 with driver.

The IDRC will adjust these limitations as needed to establish additional parity. For positive displacement-type superchargers or blowers, future overdrive percentage and blower displacement limits will be set as more "real world" performance data is gathered.

The change was made to avoid splitting the V8 cars into a separate Pro class, since there are such a small number of Pro Class cars. [5-6-2002]

SAVOIE GETS CVEC RACING SPONSORSHIP

CVEC Power Systems, Inc. has formed a sister company that will specialize in sponsorship and marketing opportunities, licensing and other operations. Sponsorship of Angelle Savoie's NHRA Pro Stock Bike Star Racing team is the first step in expanding the new business. CVEC Power Systems, headquartered in Melbourne, FL, manufactures performance exhaust systems for the hobby/radio-controlled industry.

The Star Racing team had faced an uncertain future without a sponsor until meeting CVEC representatives at the Gainesville national event in March.

"One of the reasons we didn't have a sponsor up to this point was because we were being very selective," said Star Racing team owner George Bryce. "It's hard to do when you don't have a deal, especially because we really wanted to defend our championship and try for three in a row.

"What's really neat about our deal with CVEC Racing," he continued, "is that they are going to develop and distribute products that will be in perfect alignment with what Star Racing is.

CVEC Racing also revealed plans for a new points and purse system for its Hobby Drag Racing Association (HDRA). CVEC Racing will also manufacture one-tenth scale radio-controlled (RC) replicas of several current NHRA race cars. Finally, they announced the formation of Pulse Engineering, a research and development division that will work on high performance exhaust systems for the two-cycle, full-size motorcycle industry.
