The "battle of the beers" in Top Fuel racing takes on extra significance
as the NHRA traveling circus rolls into Gateway International Raceway
in Madison, Illinois. Kenny Bernstein has never won at the track, although
he has been to the final round three of the five years since the inaugural
event. With this being Bernstein's "Forever Red" farewell tour, this
is also his last chance to win at the track as a driver.
The extra pressure is that across the Mississippi River in St. Louis,
Missouri is the headquarters of Anheuser-Busch, brewer of Bernstein's
Budweiser sponsor. And with the Miller Lite entry of Larry Dixon leading
by 259 points, Bernstein has his work cut out for him. [6-25-2002]
GM RACING UNVEILS 2003 PONTIAC SUNFIRE
GM Racing recently unveiled the new 2003 Pontiac Sunfire in which Marty
Ladwig competed at the K & N Filters Sport Compact Nationals in Reading,
Pa., on June 15-16. Ladwig improved his elapsed time by over a second
from the '02 racecar.
Some specific changes on the passenger models include the redesigned
front-end styling, revised rear styling, sporty interior fabric, and
four all-new wheels and wheel covers. All '03 models are powered by
the 2.2-liter DOHC Ecotec L4 engine. This is the lightest engine (305
pounds) GM has produced in its displacement class and they say it is
one of the most compact four-cylinders in the world. [6-25-2002]
RACING ON THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY?
DRO's web ad designer, Matt Schrammel, tried out the seat of Cody McManama's
'57 Chevy Pro Mod when the team stopped by the DragRacingOnline offices
on their way to the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals, but decided that
the computer mouse felt a bit more comfortable in his hands - for now,
anyway. [6-25-2002]
