ALBERT
SETS UNOFFICIAL RECORD
Jerry Albert's Alcoa-backed Top Sportsman '97
Camaro had an excellent Halloween weekend at
the 30th Annual Summit Classic Presented by
Dart Machinery at Norwalk (Ohio) Raceway Park.
In addition to getting the Super 16 event win
over Bill Spangler, Albert took the points championship
and set an unofficial record.
On the fourth pass on a new Hemphill Racing
Engines powerplant, Albert lit the scoreboard
with a 6.758/205.29, crushing Scott Shafiroff's
single 4-barrel record of 6.793/203. Albert
used a Powerglide transmission with a BTE torque
converter and components prepared by Al Gottschling
to accomplish the feat. [11-20-2003]
BONIFERRO REPEATS
At
the same Norwalk event, Canadian racer Joe Boniferro
qualified number one at 6.453/216.83, and went
on to win the Oddy's Performance/G-Force Race
Cars Frantic 4. After getting the final round
win over Rick Sornberger's nitrous-aided Camaro,
Boniferro's Koffel's Place-sponsored supercharged
Dodge Avenger also took out another vehicle.
A little four-wheeler that was sitting in a
prohibited area got entangled in the Avenger's
chutes and the driver was pulled off his vehicle.
He was not injured. [11-20-2003]
