IHRA CONSIDERING THREE-DISC CLUTCH FOR BLOWN PRO MODS

DRO heard from several racers that IHRA tech director Mike Baker is considering allowing blown Pro Mods to use three-disc clutches instead of the current mandatory two-disc clutch. Several racers told DRO that they have found cracks in the aluminum "hats" of their two-disc clutches. This could lead to catastrophic clutch failure -- a safety concern that has led Baker to at least consider a rule change.

Baker informed DRO that he had not made a decision about changing the rule, was looking into the matter and wouldn't make any decision until the middle of next week. One racer that DRO contacted about the problem stated that he had problems with his aluminum hat but switched to a "hat" machined from titanium and had no further problems. [12-11-2003]

FLOATING REAREND RUMORS

A rumor, repeat RUMOR, circulating through the Pro Mod community is that NHRA is considering making a full-floater rear-end assembly mandatory for Pro Mods competing at

their events. Supposedly, the reason for even considering such is that some consider the use of non-floater rear-ends to be a safety issue. [12-11-2003]

'63 VETTE IS THE BEST ACCORDING TO GM

One of the Agent's operatives let him in on a little secret. Supposedly several racers considering building new Pro Mods contacted the engineers at GM's wind tunnel and asked them what body style was the most aerodynamic. To their surprise, instead of the new Pontiac or Chevy Pro Stock bodies, the engineers told them the best body was the 1963 split window Corvette body and the second best was the 2000/2002 'Vette. No wonder so many '63 'Vettes show up as Pro Mods. [12-11-2003]
