PONTIAC AWARDS GRAND PRIX GTP TO HORTON
Chip Horton now has to make room in his garage
for a brand-new, 40th anniversary Pontiac Grand
Prix GTP as the Jesup, Ga., resident won the
limited-edition automobile after being crowned
overall IHRA Sportsman champion in the inaugural
Summit SuperSeries presented by Pontiac. GM
Racing's Fred Simmonds presented the 40th anniversary
Grand Prix to Horton at the 32nd annual Hooters
IHRA Championship Awards Banquet.
Horton, who lost his left leg in an accident
when he was 17, has won over 700 races and 22
track championships during his career - all
without hand controls or special equipment.
"Pontiac wanted to offer the Sportsman competitors
a high-performance automobile that embodied
the spirit of the IHRA Summit SuperSeries,"
said Simmonds. "The 40th anniversary Grand Prix
was the perfect car and really something very,
very special. We're happy for Chip and know
that he'll make a great champion."
DRO ran a ProFile of Horton, written by Dale
Wilson, in our November 2002 issue. Check our
archive. (1-22-2003)
FIRST LOOK FROM FIREBIRD
Veteran lensman and DRO Nostalgia Editor, Tim Marshall, sent these photos from the NHRA test session at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix. Above is Gary Scelzi's new ride, looking amazingly like Scotty Cannon's. Guess the drivers will have to take their helmets off so we can tell them apart by their haircuts - unless Scelzi starts sporting a Mohawk.
Whit Bazemore is at the helm of his new Dodge Stratus.
Force's race car is green, a color long believed
to be unlucky in the racing community. Guess
with 11 championships, he can afford to tempt
fate just a bit. [1-17-2003]
FREY LOOKING FOR DRAGSTERS
National Dragsters that is. Agent 1320 has
learned that NHRA announcer, PR person extraordinaire
and connoisseur of fine old Chrysler Dart sedans
Bob Frey is trying to put together a compete
collection of National Dragsters. Bob let the
Agent know that he would even be willing to
get off of some of the large cash reserves he
has accumulated while working as an NHRA announcer
to purchase copies that he is missing. If you
have some old National Dragsters that you would
like to sell to Bob email us here at response@racingnetsource.com
(put 'National Dragsters' in the subject line)
and we will pass your contact info on to Bob.
