GM TO SPONSOR
LAS VEGAS SPORT COMPACT RACE
General Motors will be the title
rights sponsor for the first NHRA Sport Compact
event of the year. The GM Performance NHRA
Sport Compact Nationals will be held March
15-16 at Las Vegas. In addition to Marty Ladwig,
other GM Racing drivers are Nelson Hoyos and
Matt Hartford. Jon Lingenfelter, seriously
injured in a crash last season, also drove
for the GM team. [2-24-2003]
BLOWER SUITS HOOVER
Pro Mod veteran Ed Hoover made his first-ever
passes in a supercharged racecar at the Radiac
Abrasives WinterNationals Feb. 14-16. The longtime
nitrous campaigner debuted a brand-new Tommy
Mauney-built 1963 Corvette with a blown 526
c.i. Jan-Cen engine between the rails. Hoover,
from Gilbert, SC, had a little trouble getting
a good burnout going on his first attempt, but
explained the throttle cable felt a little stiff,
so he just "didn't want to over-rev the engine
the first time out." Other than that minor glitch,
Hoover said he thought the blown car was "different,
but a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward
to seeing what we can do with it this year."

PRESTON STEPS UP TO TOP SPORTSMAN
Also
debuting a brand-new car at Darlington was Kenny
Preston, from Summerville, SC. Preston previously
campaigned a narrowed '66 Chevelle in Top ET,
but had CMX Chassis Made Extreme put together
a beautiful new '57 Chevy Top Sportsman car
for him, with paint by Chris Minichello of CM
Designs. The new car carries a nitrous-injected
632 c.i. Eagle up front and Preston plans to
run the full IHRA series with it this year.

FORMAT CHANGE AT DOORSLAMMER CHALLENGE
With the Pro Mod "Race to the Fives" over after
Mitch Stott's barrier breaking 5.98 lap at Darlington
on February 14, the promoters of the InfiNet
Ultimate Doorslammer Challenge have changed
the format for their event. Instead of $5,000
for the quickest e .t. at the March 22 event
at Virginia Motorsports Park, now the first
four cars that run in the fives after two sessions
will receive $1,000 each. [2-19-2003]
