CAN ANYBODY TUNA FISH?
When
Scott Geoffrion said the Phoenix NHRA race
would be the last for his Hurley Blakeney-owned
NitroFish Pro Stock Ford Mustang, he had no
idea it really would be. Geoffrion, who qualified
in the No. 8 position for the Checker Schuck's
Kragen Nationals at Firebird Raceway, took
a wild ride into the right guardrail in the
first round of competition. The hard contact
with the concrete wall sent him to Maricopa
County Medical Center overnight for observation.
"My back is bothering me," said Geoffrion,
37. "Otherwise, I'll be all right. I broke
three vertebras in my back in 1983 and had
two rods put in my back. Two years ago I fell
off the roof and cracked a vertebra, so the
doctors want to do more testing."
A broken left front brake rotor caused the
Mustang to make a move left toward the guard
wall after Geoffrion crossed the finish line.
The impact - the car hit nose first, then
swung around and whacked the left rear against
concrete - did serious damage.
"The rotor split in half," Geoffrion said.
"When I hit the brakes, the car moved toward
the left wall. When I turned, the thing came
around so quickly there was nothing I could
do.
"It's a bummer about the car . . . it was
already sold," added Geoffrion. [2-24-2003]
STEPHENSON INJURED
Following a third round loss at the Gainesville
Raceway Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event,
Competition Eliminator racer Tony Stephenson
was involved in a high-speed crash. Reports
indicate that the car got loose on the top
end, struck the wall and then careened into
the opposite lane where it struck Tim Timmerman's
B/Econo Altered. Stephenson was transported
via helicopter to Shands Memorial Hospital
in Gainesville, Fla. [2-24-2003]
