So many questions,
so few answers

8/3/05

ust Wondering . . . Is it really necessary to have two or three qualifying sessions for a heads-up, all-run program? If it's all run, what is the purpose? I say just have one qualifying session to set the ladder and then start the race.

Just Wondering . . . Am I the only fan who's tired of all-run programs that have turned qualifying into a boring and unimportant exercise just to give the track more time to sell burgers, beers and many times just results in a long, boring afternoon before a race?

Just Wondering . . . Is there anyone left who was involved in professional drag racing at any level in the prior to 1969 that hasn't been inducted into some hall of fame somewhere? Pretty soon those that haven't been inducted will be in a more exclusive club than those that have.

Just Wondering . . . How many fans actually give a damn about pre-race ceremonies (National Anthem and pre-race prayer aside)? I don't know about you but after I've been sitting on an aluminum bleacher for a couple of hours in the sun watching time trials, I'm ready for race cars going down the track.

Just Wondering . . . Just how quick and fast an 815-cubic-inch IHRA Pro Stocker that goes 6.30's on gasoline would go with a couple of stages of nitrous? And while I'm wondering, how much quicker could one of today's 500-inch motors drive that have pushed NHRA Pro Stockers into the 6.60's run with three stages of nitrous?

Just Wondering . . . Wouldn't it be cool if an unsponsored Pro Stock team in either NHRA or IHRA airbrushed/painted their car so that from the grandstand it appeared to be completely stock? I'll bet that would get an unsponsored team more attention that a "trick" paint job.

Just Wondering . . .
Whatever happened to that five-second pass that the rule changes in NHRA Pro Mod was supposed to facilitate?

Just Wondering . . . Whatever happened to Scotty Cannon?

Just Wondering . . . Am I the only one that thinks the vicious, run the guts out of 'em every lap, eight-car, qualified Pro Mod races at NHRA events in 2003-2004 will be looked back on in history as the golden age of Pro Mod racing?

Just Wondering . . . Does anyone remember when there was almost a revolt in the NHRA Nitro Funny Car ranks when Force announced a third team? Boy, have times changed! At last count Schumacher has seven or eight and no one seems to care anymore.

Just Wondering . . . How much longer will the innovators in nitro racing keep designing and building expensive new parts only to have the NHRA tech department shoot the ideas down? Especially since, apparently, the tech department initially gives them an unofficial okay to build the part.

Just Wondering . . . Is it just a matter of time before we regularly see five-second, 235-mph bracket cars?

Just Wondering . . . Why George Howard's "Million Dollar" bracket race doesn't attract more media attention? It just goes to show that money doesn't attract media . . . unless you are bribing, er, I mean paying them!

Just Wondering . . . Why didn't the NHRA buy a full page ad with race and TV schedules in USA Today when that newspaper had the big story about second generation Pro racers? It was the perfect opportunity to give the sport a boost -- I thought.

Just Wondering . . . Will another driver have to be killed or severely injured in drag racing because he or she wasn't wearing a head and neck restraint before the sanctioning bodies make them a mandatory safety item? How are those devices any different than seatbelts or a firesuit. I know, I know, I've said this before, but people continue to get needlessly hurt.

Just Wondering . . . Have you noticed that all of the Force drivers, including John Force himself, now wear a head and neck device? Hmmm, wonder what caused him to change his mind?

Just Wondering . . . With less than a month until drag racing's (supposedly) biggest event, why haven't I seen something promoting that race other than ticket sales ads on NHRA TV? Wouldn't you think they would have had a U.S. Nationals segment on every NHRA2day show and two-hour event broadcast starting with the coverage from Sonoma? After all the U.S. Nationals is the biggest race in drag racing, isn't it? Well, isn't it?
