econd generation drag racing photographer Mark Rebilas shot this sequence of Ron Krisher’s flaming crash at the just completed NHRA event at Seattle. Krisher crashed head-on into the concrete guard wall just after crossing the finish line. He had just beat Jeg Coughlin to advance to the final round of Pro Stock.

After the crash Krisher told a TV audience that he had some kind of problem with the brake pedal. Pro Stock drivers generally shove the clutch in as soon as they pull the chutes. With the pedals in a Pro Stock car so close together, it's easy to see how his feet could have gotten tangled. Although Krisher was in the flame-engulfed car for a fairly long time and inhaled a lot of fumes before the safety crews reached him, he was given a clean bill of health and vowed to return in time for the race at Sonoma this weekend.
