MOTHER’S DAY TRIBUTE!

By Tracy Winters
5/1/06

t seems appropriate to pay tribute to Mother’s around the world during the month of May, since Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 14th.  The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations can be traced to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.

During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called “Mothering Sunday”.  Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, (the 40-day period leading up to Easter.)  “Mothering Sunday” honored the mothers of England.

During this time many of the England’s poor worked as servants for the wealthy.  As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers.

On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers.  A special treat called the mothering cake was often brought along to provide a festive touch.

In the fast passed world of mothers it is nice to have a SUNDAY to rest and celebrate it with your family.  In ancient time Sunday was a day of rest, but today it seems like we are busier and busier with little rest.  Being a mother has been the most rewarding experience of my life, but at times it is so busy that you aren’t sure if you are coming or going!

The sport of drag racing often keeps many husbands and Father’s away from their families on many weekends.  While the husbands are off racing as a career or a hobby the many mothers around the world the burden of raising the family tends to fall on the shoulders of the mothers.

It seems more and more women are participating in the sport of auto racing. These women are an inspiration to the young woman around the world.

Through their visibility young woman are encouraged to venture out into potential new careers!  So whether you are a full time stay at home mom, race car driver or working full time in a profession take a rest on Mother’s Day and enjoy your day!
