Jim Neilson's Jet Limo, typical World
Series fare.

The 47th Annual World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova Dragway. This
wild-ass, oldest of all independent races was a stone hoot from the
time they opened the gates 'til closing time. Wheelstanders, jets, Unlimited
Pro Stocks, Fuel Altereds, Funny Cars, Top Fuel, fireworks and dollar
beer. It was shows like this that first whetted my appetite for drag
racing. And if you insist I pick from the HRA barrel of bobbing apples,
then I would say the NHRA MATCO TOOLS Supernationals in Houston. Bobby
Baldwin runner-ups in Top Fuel. W.J. breaks 17-race winless streak,
Schultz wins Pro Stock Bike. Damn, the thing actually had some real
drama. (CM)
WORST EVENT
Tie: Englishtown and the first Motorplex race. Will somebody please
just look at the radar, realize there won't be any racing, and send
the troops home. They burned enough Jet-A kerosine at the Motorplex
to fuel a 747. (JB)

Smoking tires at St. Louis at the starting
line and,
unfortunately, on the top end as well.

The annual NHRA summer sizzler at St. Louis. It was soooo hot I was
forced to retreat to the horse track just up the road, where I proceeded
to drop about $400. An yeah, if I'd won $400 THAT would have been the
year's best event. (JL)
The first Englishtown; it was cold and rainy and unbelievably disorganized.
(RL)
Probably the NHRA St. Louis bomb. Unbearable humidity, next to "0"
traction. A 4.70 beats a 4.84 in Top Fuel? Time to leave town, Waylon.
The only thing the race had going for it was nearby Fairmont Park (for
the horses) and a couple of good local bars when the muggy hot temps
became too much. (CM)
