The first layer of black is taken off, revealing metalflake paint underneath and some of the striping and shading on the side.

I bought the body in May 2000. The first coat of paint to go was the black on the top. Below the black was a metalflake paint job. This was by far the thickest paint on the car. As you can see in the photos, someone paid a pretty penny for that metalflake paint at one time. It was probably done in the early '70s. Below the metalflake was orange which was under a layer of primer below the metalflake. Then a rust colored primer and another orange, slightly lighter than the orange above it. This, I believe, is the original paint.

How many layers of paint? Lots.

I used the Car Craft article for reference and there are several points of identification, not the least of which is the paint. The stripe on the rear spoiler and the rear bumper are still there. There are two points at the leading edge of each side of the roof which match the side paint treatment on the fastback side. Most all of the paint is gone from the roof. I took photos and tried to match the angles in the magazine article. You can count the screw holes where the tin and windows were attached. The aluminum over the motor is still in the car.

This is the windshield where the car was cut in half.
