41. JOHN MULLIGAN
"The Zookeeper's" first great achievement, and maybe his career topper
in some respects, was his 6.95/221.12 at the Carlsbad Raceway on Oct.
9, 1966. That is generally accepted as the first six-second Top Fuel
time ... Mulligan was also the first in the seven 'teens that year when
he charged to a 7.16 at the AHRA World Championships at Lions Dragstrip
in August. Both of these runs were in the candy-striped Gene Adams and
Jack Wayre dragster ... The first sea-level six-second run in AHRA Top
Fuel history came from Mulligan in Tim Beebe's dragster when he ran
a 6.85 at the 1968 AHRA Spring Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. ... earlier
that year Mulligan charged to a 6.91 at the Bakersfield March Meet for
the distinction of being the first Top Fuel racer to break that barrier
at the prestigious race ... As hard as it is to believe, Mulligan never
won an AHRA national event nor, obviously IHRA (founded in 1971) trophy.
His 1969 NHRA Winternationals trophy is his lone national event win.
40. FRANK MANZO Manzo's first of six NHRA Winston Alcohol Funny Car
championships featured one of the closest points battles in class history.
Manzo went into the last event of the 1981 season, the NHRA Winston
Finals at Orange County, with a very narrow points lead over No. 2 man,
Gary Southern in Bill Dunlap's "Capt. Crazy" Dodge Omni. As eliminations
progressed, Southern set low e.t of the meet at a 6.51 and then defeated
Manzo in the semifinals. All Southern had to do was beat Brad Anderson
in the final and the Winston championship was his. He took a slight
lead off the line in that, but the Dodge got loose a few hundred feet
off the line and Anderson was able to pass him and preserve Manzo's
title. Manzo would probably be the first to tell you that world title
number one was the toughest of his career.
42. DAVID RAMPY
And now for your official David Rampy IHRA Victory Addendum. Rampy won
the Hot Rod category (10.90 index) at the 1982 IHRA Winter Nationals,
Summer Nationals, and U.S. Open, the 1983 IHRA Winston Spring Nationals,
and the 1984 IHRA Winter Nationals and U.S. Open. He switched to the
Super Rod class in 1985 (9.90 index) and captured the crowns at the
IHRA Winter Nationals, the IHRA Kangaroo Gateway Nationals, and the
IHRA U.S. Open. His last IHRA win came at the 1988 IHRA Super Nationals
at DeSoto Memorial Speedway where he won Super Rod.
43. FRANK HAWLEY
When Hawley and the "Chi-Town Hustler" Dodge lost to Raymond
Beadle's "Blue Max" Ford at the 1982 NHRA Winternationals, they not
only took part in the quickest side-by-side Funny Car race, but the
first eliminations' side-by-side five-second Funny Car race as well
... In his four years with the "Chi-Town Hustler," Hawley won the World
Series of Drag Racing four years in a row (1981-1984) and both days
of the 1982 Union Grove "Olympics." Both of these match races routinely
featured talent like Tom Hoover, Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" cars, Bob
Pickett, and the Creasy family.... At the 1982 NHRA Golden Gate Nationals
in Fremont, Calif., Hawley turned in another first with four straight
5.8-second times.
