48. MALCOLM DURHAM
Durham's "Strip Blazer IV" Corvair was the third unblown Chevy-powered
Funny Car in the 8s, running an 8.96/157 at Cecil County, Md. on Aug.
13, 1966 ... (The first two were Dickie Harrell, a very questionable
8.98/140.18 at Cordova, May 21, and Huston Platt's very likely 8.89/153
in the "Dixie Twister" Nova at York U.S. 30 on June 12).
49. RICHARD THARP
Won two IHRA Top Fuel World Championships, one in 1981
with the Candies & Hughes dragster and one in 1983 with the Kilpatrick
& Connell entry.... In 1983, Gary Beck had 17 of the lowest 18 Top Fuel
elapsed times. The one he didn't have was No. 5 in that skein. Tharp
held it at a 5.447 ... Tharp's first (or one of the very first) big
wins came at the 1966 AHRA Divisional Championships when he won Top
Fuel in the Bush & Payne entry over Watus Simpson in the Anderson Bros.
dragster in Smithfield, Texas ... Opposite Don Garlits when he blew
off the top half of his right foot at Lions during the Top Fuel final
at the AHRA Grand American was Tharp in the Creitz & Donovan dragster
... Tharp set the lowest elapsed time in Funny Car history for the time
when he ran a 6.37 in the "Blue Max" to beat Pat Foster in Barry Setzer's
Vega in the final at the 1972 IHRA Longhorn Nationals in Dallas, Texas.
