These are the only body
parts known to exist of Dean's aluminum
Spyder, which mysteriously disappeared during
a nationwide tour designed to discourage
young people from speeding. (Good Communications

Sandy
Roth, a famous Hollywood photographer, had followed
Dean from L.A. on Sept. 30, 1955, intending
to shoot both the journey and the sports-car
race in Salinas. He was one of the first to
the accident scene, but declined to photograph
the dead driver in his Porsche. Here, the ambulance
crew prepares to lift passenger Rolf Wutherich,
lying beside the wrecked Spyder. In the foreground
is Donald Turnupseed, the student whose 1950
Ford turned left in front of Dean. (Sanford
Roth photo)

Whether you blast past the 1000 exhibits in
an hour or spend half a day, this is the best
entertainment value you're likely to find in
the Hoosier state. For the price of a race-track
beer ($5, or $4 for seniors and students), you'll
take a nostalgic trip through the histories
of America's heartland and its favorite son.
Furthermore, the gallery is one Indiana attraction
that is sure to impress the lady in your life
-- as evidenced by the large stack of James
Dean scrapbooks that female fans lovingly assembled
in the Fifties.
