Murray Anderson products leave an indelible mark on the Doorslammer
bracket, Steve Stanic's Camaro being yet another supreme example of the
race car builders art. Stanic qualified with a charging 6.280/230.27
(having earlier produced a 234.29 TS), and then dropped a 6.122/236.42
on Gary Phillips in the first round of eliminations before falling to
Ben Bray in the semis.
Which brings us on, finally, to two of the biggest names in the sport
down under. The father and son team of Victor and Ben Bray have drawn
much of the attention to Australian Doorslammer action, with father now
having to settle for a supporting role to "The Kid".
Bray Snr held the Doorslammer championship from 1996 to 2001, and has
been working on a new combination in his Castrol backed Anderson built
57 Chevy over the past couple of seasons in the search of a class legal
five second pass, although consistency has yet to be stamped onto these
efforts despite the occasional 245mph+ terminal.
Bray Jnr meanwhile inherited Dad's old car and has been doing just
fine, taking the Championship in 2002/3, runner-upped to Stevens in
2003/4, and looks to have a serious handle on the Supercheap Auto
Stores entry for 2004/5. Ben qualified number one with a 6.095/234.09,
set low ET and a new national record at 6.069 in the semi final defeat
of Stanic, and then took the event win with a 6.103/233.16 in the final
round. Couple all that performance with awesome driving ability The Kid
is a superstar in the making if he isn't one already.
Drag Racing in Australia is going through a boom time, and
with the talk of the season expanding to include
venues in Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra,
make sure your diary finds a slot for a trip
Down Unda in the very near future!
