Torkleson's unique '55 T-Bird/53 'Vette (the car has a T-bird back half and a 'Vette nose) powered by a blown Chrysler Hemi led all qualifiers with a 6.485/218.02 blast. But just two-thousandths behind him was Pat Stoken's nitrous oxide-injected '67 Camaro with a 6.487/217.66. All but one of the qualifiers ran into the sixes.

Torkelson ran a string of 6.50's to get to the final round while Stoken ran 6.40's on the other side of the ladder on his way to the nitrous versus blower final round.

Torkelson must have felt that Stoken had the performance advantage as he took a shot at the tree and came up with a stellar .017 light against Stoken's .094. Torkelson got the win with his best timing of the race, a 6.468 that buried Stoken's off the pace 6.927.

SPORTSMAN RESULTS

The four-day bracket tournament at the Nightfire Nationals began in 1976 and is believed to be the oldest event of its kind. Amazing for this day and age where dragsters dominate drag racing, door cars won every day's race. Idaho racer Burdette Hoelzle won the overall points championship in a Datsun Pick-up! and was runner-up to the race Champion Ron Nickels who was in an '64 Olds 442.
