Instead of qualifying eight cars as was done in the Top Fuel division, only the quickest four fuel alts made the "A" main. Three of those top four qualifiers made five-second laps to qualify, led by Ron Fassl's New Age altered which torched the competition by setting Top Speed and Low ET at 5.505/269.78. He then went on to win the four-car elimination beating Gary Read in the final with a 5.472/267 lap that buried Read's troubled 10-second pass.

Also different from the Top Fuel field was the fact that the Fuel Altered class actually offered three races. In addition to the "A" main for the four quickest cars there were two more consolation races.

Randy Eakins, driving his '37 Fiat Topolino from Nevada won the "B" main over Las Vegas racer James Generalas's '23 T-Bucket, 6.376/240 to a 6.46/213.32. [Ed. Note: We're not sure but we think these were "real" fuel altered cars not "transformers."]

The "C" Main winner was Texan Mitch King who drove his "Transformer" to a 5.906/235.23 win over Oregonian Dave Hix, who ran a 6.092/235.78. This was actually a closer race than it shows on paper as King cut a .227 light and Hix a .090.

PRO MODIFIED

The Pro Mod eliminator program had just eight cars entered but, with the field evenly divided between nitrous cars and blown cars and featuring NHRA Pro Mod regulars Wayne Torkelson, Dennis Radford and John Scialpi, it offered plenty of entertainment for the 'slammer fans in the stands.
