Top Fuel pilot Scott Palmer was in
Orlando as a teammate to Scott Wiens with this blown alcohol-burning
’63 Corvette. Palmer qualified 31st in Super Pro Street
with a 7.028-secs pass, then fell in the opening round to
eventual race winner Shannon Jenkins. Commenting on the action
later over the track’s P.A. system, he said, “This
makes NHRA Top Fuel seem boring!”
“This crowd is weird to me; not bad, but different.
We’re used to all these old guys coming out, but these
people are a lot younger and more crazy. It’s definitely
fun to race in front of so many people, though.” --
Matt Stambaugh, who with his father, Rick, are longtime nostalgia
Funny Car competitors, and were on hand in Orlando to help
out with the Heavy Street entry of Palm Bay, FL’s Gino
Bia and his blown Chevy-powered ’72 Cuda
“We made it off the porch. We’re runnin’
with the big dogs now!” -- Number-17
qualifier Bobby Cole on getting past the first round in Outlaw

Linden, MI’s Jason McNeil put
Ronnie Duke’s brand-new LS1-powered 2005 GTO 23rd on
the Super Pro Street qualifying list with a 6.955-seconds
pass at 202.65 mph, but fell in the opening round to Ben Hopko.
It
may not have been the prettiest car on the grounds, but who
cares? “Energy” Faircloth’s 1968 Chevelle
certainly provided one of the biggest thrills at Orlando with
this huge wheelstand on Saturday afternoon.
