“The track is incredible; the best I’ve ever seen
here. I don’t know what they did to it, but it’s
really hooking out there.” --
Tony “Sandman” Williams just moments before heading
out and going airborne after breaking both wheelie bars on the
launch of his supercharged ’69 Camaro in the opening round
of Super Pro eliminations
Ed Thornton, last year’s number-one qualifier in Super
Pro, slotted in at 17th this year with his twin-turbo ’57
Chevy, then lost in round one to Mike Moran. Thornton, from
Chino Hills, CA, said he’d had the turbos rebuilt for
the Orlando event by Harry Hruska at Precision Turbo and they
were spooling up so much quicker and producing so much boost
that it was throwing off his starting line tune-up and he
was losing traction. “They’re just too good for
us,” Thornton joked as he performed routine maintenance
late on Saturday night. “We have to catch up.”
“We just lucked our way through, man, that’s
it.” -- Billy Glidden on making
it to the Super Pro semis
Mike Keeler secured the 32nd and final Outlaw 10.5 qualifying
position with a 7.505/195.39 in his Winchester, VA-based 1970
Camaro.
After qualifying 24th, Buffalo, MN’s Steve Miller faced
off against Billy Glidden in the first round of Super Pro,
but experienced this scary fire off the line in his twin-turbocharged
1999 Chevy S-10 pick-up. Fortunately, Miller escaped safely
from the blaze.
