ayne Torkelson just keeps rolling on in his quest for the 2005 Mickey Thompson Nitro Coupe Challenge World Championship. Torkelson sliced through the Nitro Coupe field like George Washington did to the British to take the winner's slot in the AutoZone Super Chevy Show's Virginia Motorsports Park event Oct. 2 before a record-setting crowd.

Torkelson set the tone for the weekend as he scored the Trim Parts Low Qualifier award on Saturday. When Sunday's eliminations rolled around, he put together three great runs, including a near season record 6.285 at 225.30 mph in the first round.

Canadian star Bruce Boland was Torkelson's opposition in the finals but Torkelson prevailed with his Water Wetter/Red Line Oil '54 Corvette Nitro Coupe churning out a 6.326 at 220.84 to Boland's 6.538 at 212.19 miles per hour. Boland's run was 6.538 seconds at
212.19 mph.
In the Top Sportsman finals, two Virginia racers faced each other. Randy Perkinson (above) of Colonial Heights, VA, took his '01 Grand Am to the winner's circle with a 6.977-second blast at 199.29 miles per hour on his dial of 6.93 seconds. Runner-up Jessie Grant of Chesapeake, VA, ended the contest early with a -.037 red light foul.

Winners in the Flowmaster Bracket Racing Series included Keith Cox of Disputanta, VA, in Mr. Gasket Bracket One, Bo Snoddy of Amelia, VA, in Bracket Two, Bob Perrot of Chesterfield, VA, in DOT and Carlton Thornton of Richmond, VA, in Jr. Dragster.

Roger Gustin, President of AutoStar Productions, the producers of the AutoZone Super Chevy Show, announced that the Virginia Motorsports Park crowd had once again set an attendance record for the event. "Even in these days of sky-high gas prices, I think this shows the loyalty of Super Chevy Show fans; they appreciate and understand the value they receive when they attend one of our events," said Gustin.

"On behalf of AutoZone, GM and all our other sponsors, I want to thank the thousands who came out to our event in Virginia this past weekend," Gustin added. "I'd like them to mark their calendars now for June 9-11, 2006, when the Super Chevy Show will bring their 26th Annual Tour back to Virginia Motorsports Park. We hope this new date at the beginning of the summer will allow even more people to enjoy an incredible Super Chevy weekend," Gustin said.

The AutoZone Super Chevy Show returns to National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend Oct. 7-9.
