With only three cars entered in Pro Street,
Pat Musi had to get past only Mike Steele before facing
fellow New Yorker Vinnie Budano in the final. Unfortunately,
Budano broke a valve in his first-round bye, so Musi made
a solo pass for the event win.
The Top Street title in Atlanta went
to number-one qualifier Kenny Farrell from Fort Mill, SC,
in his ’68 Camaro. When Farrell beat Ronnie Davis
in the final with a 6.938-secs pass his ride wasn’t
over at the finish line. After battling a nitrous system
that wouldn’t shut off properly all weekend, Farrell
said it finally caught up with him and he couldn’t
stop in time to avoid a trip to the sandbox. “I briefly
thought about trying to make the last turnoff, but figured
I’d probably tear up more stuff than if I just went
straight.” The car suffered a little cosmetic damage
to its nose and was covered in dust when it returned to
the pits, but otherwise appeared okay.
Larry Perkins brought his beautiful
’66 Nova down from Collegeville, PA, and made it to
the Hot Street final where he fell to Zionsville, IN’s
Tim Davis in a ’93 Dodge.
With 20 cars, the Nostalgia Super Stock
class easily had the largest field at Atlanta, and in the
end it was Brian Merrick (far lane) coming from the fourth
slot to take the win home to Dellroy, OH, with his 427-powered
1964 Ford Thunderbolt. In the final round, Merrick beat
number-one qualifier Jim Netherland and his ’67 Buick
after both drivers dialed in at 10.50 and Merrick went 10.519
while Netherland broke out at 10.497 seconds.
