Rick McGee put the screws to the Tedford bros prepped entry and drove
around Kirk Kuhns out on the big end. Kent Terry lost some traction
off the pad, corrected and pedaled back into it only to see Roger "Radar"
Lechtenburg drive the Orange Crate out the back door. Jack Harris took
a single after Brendan Murray lost fire after the backup yet Harris
clicked off a 6.10 regardless. Number one qualifier Bill Dunlap sent
the Cammer-powered entry of Bach and Gould (above) back to the trailer
and in a major upset, Rance McDaniel bulbed in a matchup with the legend
of South San Francisco, the Jesse Perkins' "Cow Palace Shell" digger
(below).
Wally Giavia, another former NHRA fuel pilot took the Perkins car
to the next round over the Champion Speed Shop car. Tim Gibson came
out with the whole can in the MasterCam-Hedge entry and put away Jim
Murphy (above) with a stout burn. Butch Blair (below) found his way
to the next round as he drove his "417" Donovan powered Fugowie into
round three against Lee Jennings Jr.
