KING WASN'T CROWNED THIS DAY
Chip King and tuner Bill Barrett had the horses to win
at Houston, they just couldn't control them. King's Avenger chattered
the tires at the top of first gear on almost every pass. Despite that
they did manage to get low elapsed time and top speed of the meet with
a 6.273/226.77 which going into the IHRA event at Virginia is the quickest
and fastest pass ever with a 2700 lb slammer!
KUHLMANN CATCHING UP
Bill Kuhlmann has been struggling to find the combination
to get his Fontana-powered '69 'Vette into the Pro Mod fields this year.
He took a giant step toward that goal at Houston with a 6.483/212.16
qualifying lap. If the rumor circulating through the Pro Mod pits --
that Bill accidentally had a 4.10 gear instead of a 4.56 behind the
motor -- is true, he could be bad fast at Bristol. He had the quickest
60-ft time with a .991.

GREY MAKES MOVE FROM WAY BACK
Number three qualifier Frankie Taylor, who usually runs
"Outlaw" Pro Mod but did race at the first IHRA event at Rockingham,
couldn't answer the bell on Sunday and was replaced by first alternate
Tommy Grey Jr. who pushed his blown '53 'Vette "Undertaker" to the semi-finals
before bowing to Shannon Jenkins.
