MCMANAMA, ENSSLIN STRUGGLE
Nineteen-year-old Cody McManama got into the field at
Gainesville with a last lap effort. He couldn't repeat that feat at
Houston as bad tire shake and a tricky track combined to cause the rear-end
housing to actually split, ripping off the four link bar on one side.
The team didn't discover the problem until after the last lap.
Teammate Jeff Ensslin had his own problems when he burned
a couple of pistons. The team replaced the pistons, but couldn't repair
a torched sleeve.
HERE'S THE BEEF
Mike Castellana's Western Beef-sponsored, brand-new Tommy
Mauney-built '41 Willys is showing signs of coming around. In only his
second race in the car, Castellana ran a respectable 6.396/218.12. Only
a final round spurt of 6.30's from blown cars kept the beefy New Yorker
out of the program.
