A whopping 37 Pro Modifieds filled the Norwalk staging
lanes, with IHRA defending champ Mike Janis leading the pack with a
6.269/225.60 in his '63 Corvette. When the final came up, Janis was
long gone having lost to Tim McAmis' Corvette in round one. Instead,
Shannon Jenkins' "Iceman" '68 Camaro duked it out with Mitch
Stott's '63 Corvette with the former winning via a 6.290/222.95 to 7.413/141.74
count.
Another Stott, this being Quain, did get some satisfaction
at Norwalk as he set low e.t. and top speed with a 6.253/226.62. He
turned that while beating Steve Vick's '68 Camaro in round one.
Last season's No. 1 and No. 2 IHRA Alcohol Funny Car points
finishers reversed their roles in the World Nationals finals. Jimmy
Rector, who began this season with an IHRA record five straight wins,
notched win No. 6 with 5.844/239.19 to 6.035/233.72. Low E.T. and top
speed went to Dale Brand in the Co-Line Metal Stamping Firebird at a
5.799/241.97.
Pro Stock was a doubleheader at Norwalk as, along with
the regular 16-car event eliminator, the 8-car Sunoco Pro Stock Shootout
was run as well. Winning the $20,000 offered by Sunoco was John Montecalvo
in his 812-cid-powered Chevy Cavalier. The Center Moriches, N.Y. driver
ripped a 6.671/207.66 to put Doug Kirk's 6.70/207.05 at the pay window
for the $9,000 runner-up check.
The World Nationals title would elude Montecalvo, though.
Naturally with twenty grand in his pocket, he became a target, and taking
dead aim and hitting it was John Bartunek in round one. Bartunek's 2002
Grand Am nabbed a 6.700 to 6.688 holeshot decision in that fracas.
Another John did better than the above two and that was
John Konigshofer of Otterville, Ontario, Canada. His 2002 Cougar rolled
to a 6.63/209.85 to easily dismiss Elijah Morton's red-lighting Mustang.
Other winners at Norwalk were Gary Bingham (Top Sportsman),
Chris Sipple (Top Dragster), Brian Seward (Modified), John Furr (Quick
Rod), Nick Folk (Super Rod), Garry Fleenor (Hot Rod), Monty Bogan Jr.
(Super Stock), Gene Jordan (Stock), Matt Morgan (Top Stock), and Danny
Castle (E.T.)
