SATURDAY PARTY

Getting into the racetrack became a problem on Saturday, unless you arrived early. Wave after wave of hot rods, rat rods, roadsters, station wagons, trucks, and spectators across the age spectrum made their way into the Famoso Raceway grounds. Saturday's crowd was upwards of 23,000 by some estimates, with the wooden grandstands only holding 9,000 butts. There were cars backed up for four miles in every direction and parked any which way for the duration of the day's event. (Photo above by Zak Hawthorne)
Before the fuel cars ran, some costumed cuties consumed their breakfast of Tecate beer and fried chicken on the hood of a black primered Ford. More than a race, Saturday became a party, but not everyone was diggin' the drags. (Photo by Zak Hathorne)

Another highlight of Saturday's pit action was a great car show and an immense swap meet near the top end of the drag strip. A dazzling collection of blowers, injectors, blocks, rusted wrecks, and ready to run dragsters, funny cars, and altereds were available. (Photo by Zak Hawthorne)

Not much changed in Saturday's top fuel qualifying sessions. Steiner, the "World's Fastest Austrian," remained #1 with his 5.938, followed closely by Rance McDaniel in the Champion Speed Shop "small block" dragster at 5.949, "Sheriff" Jack Harris, last year's winner in third at 5.977, and veteran funny car pilot Dale Pulde in the Ground Zero car sitting fourth at 6.02.
