SUNDAY RACING

Sunday's crowd proved to be a bit more manageable and less of a "pit party" with hard-core nostalgia fans estimated at 8,500. There was a lot more gray hair in the stands. The racing was close, if not a bit confusing in the top fuel eliminator's final outcome, thanks to the Goodguys "break rule" which states: "Re-insertion goes to low ET loser of the previous round providing a non-disqualified pass." (I thought that only happened in Monster Truck "racing.")

In the first round Jim "Holy Smokes" Murphy stunned the crowd by running low ET and Top Speed of the meet at 5.819/255.24, defeating Mark Malde. His pass was the quickest and fastest run ever made by a front-motored top fuel dragster. Pulde and McDaniel were defeated in the first round and Steiner moved into the second round where Harris was defeated by Rick McGee driving the Tedford, McGee, & Hester dragster. Harris (above) showed up again in the semis thanks to the Goodguys "break rule," and his time he was defeated by Kent Terry driving the Circuit Breaker dragster. Steiner set both ends of the Goodguys VRA record in the semi's by running 5.884/248.5 defeating Rick McGee. The final round should have been against Kent Terry, but Terry lacked the parts to return, so Harris was back in one more time, thanks to the "break rule," this time versus Gerry Steiner.
