Nineteen-year-old Cody McManama was another
nitrous racer that didn't make the field. A broken rear-end housing
in his '57 shoebox limited the team to just three qualifying attempts. |
In the end, Fred Hahn, driving Jim Oddy's Summit-backed
2001 'Vette, and crew finally solved their handling problems, but didn't
get it done until their last qualifying lap when as the first pair out
in the final session the team ran a season best 6.167/229. That performance
was good for low elapsed time and the $2,000 low qualifier bonus until
Bob Rieger came out in the last pair and picked Oddy's pocket clean
with a 6.159.
If the races were decided by the odds makers then the
final round matchup on Sunday would have been between Hahn and Rieger,
but they still have to race at NHRA events to decide who goes to the
final round. The final round ended up being Australian Troy Critchley,
driving for the Patterson team, against Hahn in an all-blown contest.
Critchley put .051 in the bank on the leave against Rieger and then
held on for the semi-final win. Critchley's 6.290 got him to the strip
just nine-thousandths of second before Rieger's charging 6.250/226.51.
In the final it was all Hahn and he left on Critchley
and was never in trouble as his 6.267 easily covered Critchley's 6.347.

The team came back after that last lap and
did this. Team owner/engine builder Jim Oddy remarked that the front
end looked more like what you would see on a tractor puller than
a drag car. "We've got some weight left in the car at the back,
but not much," Oddy told DRO. |
