K.J. HAS TRACTION PROBLEMS
The semi-finals featured two of Pro Stock's "top guns" as Kurt Johnson
squared off with Jeg Coughlin Jr. Kurt was again first off the starting
line by .012 seconds, but traction problems sealed his fate. Coughlin
claimed the victory in 6.947 seconds while Johnson slowed to a 8.096
e.t. Coughlin then defeated Mark Osborne in the final and bumped Kurt
to third in the Pro Stock standings.
"It was a tough loss because the ACDelco Cavalier had Jeg covered by
two hundredths in the first 60 feet, but we just couldn't get a hold
of that right-hand lane," Johnson said. "The tires spun and shook all
the way through second and third gear. I tried to chase him down, but
my car just didn't like that lane.
"We'll keep testing and see what we have to do to get hooked up in
second gear," Kurt continued. "At least the chassis is reacting and
I'm getting good reaction times. Things are coming together, but you
have to have the whole package." - Rick Voegelin
WILKERSON TELLS WHAT IT'S LIKE
In Funny Car, Tim Wilkerson drove the LRS Pontiac Firebird to the semifinals
before a mechanical failure put the brakes on his bid for the winner's
circle. The Springfield, Ill., native lost in round three to Dean Skuza.
"The racetrack kind of came to our tuneup," Wilkerson said. "We seem
to run a little bit better on the bad racetracks. On the good tracks
we have to lean on our stuff a little too hard and we don't like to
do that. But up until the semifinals this LRS Pontiac Firebird was really
doing the job.
"We broke a lever off in the clutch, threw the clutch out, and when
it did that, it threw the belt off. We had the race won. The car was
doing just what it was supposed to do but hey, for not qualifying at
Las Vegas we redeemed ourselves pretty well today. We're not going to
be the fastest car but if you stumble against us we'll take you out.
"It's frustrating though to be 50 feet from the finish line and not
be able to do anything about it when the motor quits. You should have
been in the car. That motor was at 8800 rpm by the time it died. It
was terrible. I kept sinking lower and lower in the seat thinking a
blower was going to come over my head at any second, but it never did.
We're very fortunate it didn't blow up. We have a BDK valve that bleeds
fuel off if it starts smoking the tires and obviously it did its job."

BIONDO WINS SUPER STOCK
In Super Stock, defending Federal Mogul champion Peter Biondo of Mount
Laurel, N.J. returned to the winner's circle in a Pontiac Firebird by
defeating Gene Bichlmeier in the championship round.
BERNSTEIN MAKES IT TO SEMIS
When Kenny Bernstein qualified fifth during the originally scheduled
dates of March 16-17, it was very cool. On the April 21 rescheduled
dash for the trophy, it was hot and humid. Though teams were afforded
two test and tune runs on Friday, it was still a bit of a roll of the
dice for the race day set-up.
Bernstein and the Bud boys may have been holding their breath during
first round, but the tune-up was right on, Bernstein winning handily
with a 4.636/314.53 to Doug Herbert's tire smoking 6.130/138.02.
