The crowd roared its approval each time Funny Car driver Bunny Burkett carried the American flag with her during burnouts. Burkett qualified 13th in the 16-car field, but redlighted in the first elimination round against Fred Tigges.

Pro Stock racer Steve Williford debuted a new paint job on his Rick Jones-built 2001 Cavalier at Rockingham. The Engelhard, NC-based racer qualified in the number-nine spot, then beat Doug Kirk in the first round before falling to the eventual event winner Gene Wilson in round two.

"Elliott," named after NASCAR star Bill Elliott, was top dog in Mitch Stott's Pro Mod pit at Rockingham.
