Charlie Peppers, from Auburn, GA, was campaigning his new Tommy Mauney-built 2002 Mustang Pro Stocker in only its second outing. Peppers DNQ'd, though, missing John Bartunek's 6.740 bump spot by .061 secs.

What's the word? Pro Mod veteran Mitch Stott said he is working with metallurgist and cryogenics engineer Ron Word to develop what he calls a "very futuristic" air shifter and a new nitrous delivery system that will be "different from what anyone else is doing."

After qualifying on top of the 16-car GM Performance Parts Top Stock field, Faulkner, MD's Matt Morgan steered his 428-equipped '69 Mustang to the win on Saturday night. Morgan went 10.020 at 129.93 mph in the final, to beat number-two qualifier Paul Mercure's 10.198/129.85 combo in his 1968 Camaro.

TIRE TROUBLE

The Top Fuel Harley teams struggled with a severe tire wear problem at Rockingham, with rear slicks lasting only one or two passes before needing replacement. Class veterans Johnny Mancuso and Bill Furr said the tires normally last up to 25 passes.

"They're not even broken in yet and we have to throw them away," number-one qualifier Steve Stordeur added.
