PRO STOCK

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF IHRA PRO STOCK

Unlike NHRA, where just a couple of brands and models dominate the category, IHRA mountain-motored Pro Stock competition offers fans a wide variety of brands and models. At U.S. 131 no fewer than eight different brands or body styles attempting to qualified. There were Mustangs, Cougars, Cavaliers, Probes, Grand Ams, a Neon, an Avenger, and a Firebird. Now that's diversity!

DOES FORD KNOW ABOUT THIS?

Chassis builder Rick Jones had one of the first Hemi's to qualify in IHRA Pro Stock when he put his Neon into the field at Martin. Now, the fact that a Hemi made the field with a respectable 6.68 on the last lap is pretty amazing, but did you know the Chrysler Hemi that powers the Neon was built by none other than Ford favorite Jon Kaase!

BUMP DA BUMP

Only fifty-nine thousandths of a second separated the number one Pro Stock qualifier Brian Gahm from number 16 qualifier Elijah Morton. Gahm's pole came with a 6.655/208.97 while Morton held down the bump spot with a 6.696/208.10

IT'S NOT WHERE YOU START IT'S WHERE YOU FINISH

New York Pro Stock racer John Montecalvo put his Chevy Cavalier in the field in the 15th spot with a 6.692. He used a holeshot and an opponent's red light to get him to the finals where he easily beat number four qualifier and Ford racer Carl Baker. Didn't make any difference in the winner's circle as he became the first Chevy of the year to win in Pro Stock. That's why there are no style points in drag racing, just winners and second place.

PRO MOD

VICK HELPS A CARPENTER

Charlie Carpenter has been wanting to get back into Pro Mod racing. He had his '55 Shoebox but no engine. National event winner and fellow nitrous racer Steve "Quick" Vick knew of Charles' problem and was kind enough to offer Carpenter one of his complete engines. Carpenter ran a best of 6.50 and Vick on a last chance "banzai" run on Sunday morning missed the field by one thousandth of a second. A big tip of the DRO fedora to Steve Vick for helping out a fellow racer and competitor.
