An Act to Discontinue. George, Mark, and "the beautiful brown-eyed Julie" of Sports Magic were doing their college cheerleader best to jack the crowd during a Sunday afternoon oil-down clean-up. They promised an NHRA tee shirt to the section of the crowd they were fronting who yelled their cheer the loudest. One section would chant "NH -" and the other would go " - RA." Genius level self-promotion, to say the least.

Good Microphone Pop: Dave McClelland, ever on the ball, was building up the second session, the night session, for Saturday. Talking about the racket the Top Fuelers and Funny Cars make, "Big Mac" chuckled, "There won't be a West Nile Virus mosquito within miles of here after this session." Most likely, he was nuts on the money.

The best Funny Car pairing occurred Saturday night. John Force teammates Tony Pedregon and Gary Densham paired up to finish the session, and Pedregon got the early lead and went on to pinch off a low e.t. of the meet 4.797 at 317.34. Great run, but the big deal came from Densham. At half track, Densham moved up even with Pedregon and began to pass him at the 700-foot mark. Unfortunately, his Castrol car was pulling to the center, eventually crossing it, leading to a premature shutoff. The time that came up on the boards was a 4.93/244.25, but I swear, based on the number of runs I saw, the Bellflower, Calif., driver was en route to a 4.75 or 4.76 and a speed that would've bettered the team owner's topper of 321.81.
