The victories by Bernstein and Pedregon extended to seven the number of consecutive events won by Team Mac drivers in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car divisions. Winston points leaders after the first eight of 24 races in the NHRA series include Mike Dunn, driver of the New York Yankees/Mac Top Fuel dragster; Force, the 10-time Winston Funny Car Champion; and Hines, bidding to supplant Angelle Savoie as the Pro Stock Bike Champ.

Dunn, whose dragster is the fastest piston-driven race car on the planet, boosted the Matco SuperNationals and Raceway Park speed record to 325.45 mph during Top Fuel qualifying.

Englishtown had the quickest Pro Stock side by side run in NHRA history. In the quarter-finals Mark Pawuk's Pontiac Grand Am turned a 6.806 to defeat Jeg Coughlin's Cavalier, which ran 6.819.

Pro Stock driver Richie Stevens qualified No. 15, but waded through the field of Mike Edwards, Rickie Smith, and Warren Johnson to make it to the final round. In the final against Mark Pawuk, Stevens cut a perfect .400 light followed by a 6.892-second run at 200.14 mph to get the win. It was Pawuk's second second-place finish of the event, as he also finished No. 2 in the Holley Dominator Duel.
