In the "B" field it was clearly Mike McLennan's day. McLennan took
the Smith-Allred-McLennan hemi-powered digger to the number one spot,
putting away all comers. He also posted top speed (236.74), low ET (6.187).
McLennan overpowered runner up Lee Jennings Jr. despite Jenning's hole
shot advantage and took it all home with a 6.187 at 236.74 mph.
A/FUEL
In A/Fuel, Ron Attebury rolled out a brand new car and took the number
one qualifying spot in his first time behind the wheel since 1978. He
set low E.T. as 6.520 seconds.
Once again, the blown alcohol cars dominated over the injected nitro
cars even though Kin Bates and Mark Woods Jr. both took their injected
nitro diggers into the show.
Nobody, however, could stop the blown small block of Jim Paul, who
drove it out the back door for the trophy with 6.55 at 207.23 in a matchup
with arch rival Sean Bellemeur. Bellemeur had earlier turned in top
speed for the class with his career-best run of 6.52 at 213.47. Paul
got lane choice and put the youngster in the "bad" right lane. Just
like at the March Meet, Bellemeur could only watch Paul storm to victory,
6.55 to the kid's slipping and sliding 7.07.
PRO SUPERCHARGED
Pro Super clearly belonged to Steve Woods and his blown "Hypocrite"
1948 Anglia Prefect. Woods put one blown doorslammer after another back
on the trailer and ran in the sub-seven zone all day long. Woods, known
as "Ol' Blue Eyes," took home the win over Rich Roberts with a 6.87
at 203 mph.
This
race also saw the season debut of the Mallicoat Brothers '68 Cuda. With
Dale Boomgaarden behind the wheel, the car took number one qualifier
spot with an off the trailer 7.08 at 195. Jerry Mallicoat recently retired
from his post on the Dodge Viper engine development team and 2001 should
be an interesting season for the class.
