JUNIOR FUEL
Junior Fuel was a story of good luck, misfortune and crossed wires.
Class heavy and number one qualifier Mike Chrisman bowed out in the
second round with a broken drive line while March Meet winner Bill Wayne
cooked the starter in the staging lanes before the opening round.
Adam Yashuk took a round one win and three bye runs all the way to
the final but his luck ran out against Wayne Ramay. Ramay had put away
Scott Parks in the semi final and said he was very happy when he looked
up halfway down the track and saw the win light in the final round.
Yashuk had bulbed out with a .398 on a four hundred light.
The matching numbers award went to Scott Parks and Kelly Craig. When
their competing Junior Fuel cars lit up the clocks the numbers had the
crowd seeing double. Dueling 7.52's and 173's were what the records
will show. Both Scott and Kelly are in their teens and Craig rolled
out to Sears Point in an all-new configuration of her car.
GAS CLASSES
Muscle
Cars and Hot Rods alike battled it out in the A/B and C Gas index classes.
Mark Mahood (above) got his Camaro back in the winning groove and took
the A/Gas honors in a battle with Bob Clayton's "Rat Infested" Willys
coupe. Clayton has put some fire under the big block Chevy and, with
some clutch changes, seriously stepped up performance over last season.
A qualifying round saw Larry Ofria have an encounter of the guardrail
kind. Ofria was knocked out cold as he ran his blown '57 Chevy into
the barrier at half track. After an overnight stay in the hospital for
observation Larry was back in the pits on Sunday but the car suffered
extensive damage.
NOSTALGIA
In
the Nostalgia Eliminator ranks it was Tucson's own Mike Savage who was
the last one standing. Savage took his '48 Fiat Topolino-bodied Altered
to a 7.67 on a 7.60 index win. Savage truly digs drag racing as this
little beauty does double duty with a simple switch of the shell. Savage
also campaigns the car in the CIFCA series and takes the candy stripe
'37 Topo shell off and replaces it with a Funny Car body when there's
a change in venue.
OTHERS
In the bracket classes the on-my-dial award would have to go to Harold
Binsfield. Harold took his fresh out of the paint booth '55 Chevy Wagon
to the winners circle with an 11.98 on an 11.98 dial-in in Street Machine.
The Goodguys recently lowered the bar of the Street Machine One class
to a 13-second or faster requirement, which left some out in the cold,
but others getting creative with their dial-ins.
Other winners included James Martin (Nostalgia II), Judson Witty (Nostalgia
III), James Schwartz (B/Gas), Richard Maas (C/Gas), and Ron Scholz (Pacifica).
