And on the subject of W.J., I really had better not hear a lot of, "Oh man, he's getting old; he oughta let the kid drive exclusively. . .blah, blah, blah." I definitely overhead some of that at Firebird. That's gotta be the most overworked critique in the sport, the always impending retirement of that no-driving Warren Johnson. Poor helpless Warren, he gets left on and loses to a rank amateur like Jim Yates (joking, of course) and send in the clowns. Good grief, 89 NHRA career wins, 1,104 low e.t.s and top speeds, multiple world championships in NHRA and IHRA, and down the crapper he goes? Whaddya want to bet that he wins another national event in the next three races? If I lose?! If I'm wrong?! THEN I'LL GO OUT WITH JOE MILLIONAIRE. Ya big babies.

TOP FUEL

Hey Bud! That's Brandon Bernstein, Not Kenny Erase the blackboards, pound the erasers, graduation's come a little early. To anyone with Top Fuel spectating experience, Brandon Bernstein won't be turning over the keys to dad. It's going to be fun-fun-fun 'cause Kenny is not taking the T-Bird away, not when the kid banks 40K in outing number two and rattles the chops of the current kingpin L.D.J. in the process.

The pressure was on Brandon Bernstein to perform, but no one expected him to knock off Larry Dixon so early in the year.

Except maybe his father, Kenny, whose first words at the top end were, "You almost blew it." He looks pretty proud here, though.

Don Prudhomme had to console himself with a cigar and a Miller Lite - and the knowledge that Larry Dixon retained the points lead by 68 points.

The work just never ends for the RaceGirl dragster crew, whether it is holding an umbrella for shade in the Phoenix heat...

... or getting a hand from a fellow crewmember.
