FUNNY CAR
Capps Runs Away From Densham like
SKOALded Dog Gary Densham's Castrol GTX/Auto
Club juggernaut was cruising into Funny Car
harbor headed for victory when he was Ron CAPPS-sized
very unexpectedly. Before he could say 4.81/318.99,
Skoal-backed Capps was pulling the credit cards
out of his stolen wallet with a slower, but
feloniously successful 4.86/310.13 pocket dip.
Gary Densham's runner-up finish to Ron
Capps was the best the three-car John
Force team could muster at Phoenix. In
the second round, Capps took out Tony
Pedregon and Whit Bazemore eliminated
the boss. |
Perhaps the last view of the NitroFish
car. The car had been sold and Scott Geoffrion
was taking it on its last run, but hit
the wall. |
PRO STOCK
Greg Anderson, former crew chief for Warren
Johnson, has become the wind under his
own wings -- just ask Troy Coughlin and
his Columbus court Jegsters. No more standing
in the shadows of love for Greg-ster as
he figured out their Troy-Jan Horse and
slid him out the gates for a 6.86 to 6.90
win. |
Greg Stanfield's Neon finished in 15th
place at Phoenix, defeated in the first
round by Troy Coughlin. |
FACES IN THE CROWD
This youngster from Surprise, Arizona is
definitely dragster dreamin'. Those Jr.
Dragsters aren't too far away. |
Da Grump, aka Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins, was
taking notes as he helped Mark Pawuk's team. |
ONE FINAL NOTE
"The sense of his own death like the sound
of distant thunder at a picnic." - W.H. Auden
The NHRA Checker/Aw-Schucks/Kragen Nationals
slid to a comfortable 4 p.m. Sunday finish.
For those of us who play, that means we can
still make happy hour. For those who race in
the three classes absent from the Arizona menu,
the news may not be that good. I like all three
of you (especially the Funny Cars and dragsters)
but what can I say, you folks have got to pull
it together this year. That's my guess. Ten
cars showing for 16 spots will not cut it for
very long.
Happy motoring
